What is an Accidental Techie?
An Accidental Techie is the person everyone turns to when their computer goes wrong. They may not have any IT qualifications, or have anything about IT support in their job description, but they know the answer to common problems.
Many organisations rely on an Accidental Techie for technical support. They may also make purchasing decisions, offer informal training and be the contact person for an external IT support company or volunteer when specialist help is required.
If you rely on an Accidental Techie ask them how they feel about the role and whether they would like extra support or training. Ideally the role will be recognized in their job description, with time allocated to develop the support they offer.
If you have become an Accidental Techie look online for help in dealing with common issues.
